Does duplicate content on a webpage affect SEO?

In our SEO series our last article which was SEO # How many links should be posted on a webpage? we discussed about how many links were allowed to be posted on a Single Web Page. In our article today we will be discussing about duplicate content on your website and the impact it has on your search engine optimization efforts.

The most import question that comes to mind is Is duplicate content allowed by Google on a webpage? The answer is yes, if the duplicate content is there to serve a user with important aspects of your website than that is allowed. For example if you sell various products and want to display the legal terms associated with all those products on each product page for the convenience of your users than that is something which Google will not consider as spam and will not affect your SEO efforts. At most google will ignore that part and index the rest of the page.

The next question that comes to mind is What kind of duplicate content is allowed by Google? The answer to this question is very tricky. The duplicate content allowed by Google is generally what can be beneficial to your users. As explained above the legal terms on each product page is allowed because it helps users and your website. Another example can be product attributes which are same for various products is also allowed by Google. Single article relating to different products is also allowed by Google on a webpage and can be duplicated. To summarize any text/image which is on co-relation to what your webpage offers is allowed.

The most important question that comes to mind is What kind of duplicate content is not allowed by Google? This part is really important as any content which is not allowed by Google will directly affect you SEO efforts and lower your website rankings. So in order to make sure your website does not get penalized by putting in a duplicate content which is not allowed by Google make sure the following content is off your web pages:

  • Unlimited Keywords
  • Articles already marked as spam by Google
  • Keyword Stuffing
  • Links Stuffing

If you keep in mind the usability of the content for your user and not the keywords that content is perfectly safe and can be added as many times on different pages as you want.
